Many countries including Sweden and Switzerland send their cow hides to Italy to go through the tanning process. Only hides that are tanned in Italy can be called “Italian leather.”

Because this type of leather is so soft and supple, Americans tend to prefer it to any other type of leather. The most popular products made of this material include Italian leather handbags, luggage and clothing. Many American companies special order leather tanned in Italy in order to label their products “Italian Leather.”
